Just a few minutes ago I had a breakthrough of my own with the tutorial. Turns out I need to get (:style(:display set to "" before the focus will take. I ended up doing it explicitly with a :ref before modifying the state(and triggering the re-render). I've done some reading up on using IWillUpdate and ignoring certain state keys, so I see were I can hook into IDidUpdate to handle the focus after the render with something like ":enabling-edit" to create a one-shot.
