Thanks for the reply. I had thought that :opts were static for the lifetime of 
a component, but I tested it out and your solution does work, even with lists 
of children of varying length. I think that's an improvement over using 
component local state for children, but still not quite as clean as the plain 
React solution. Perhaps 'difficulty' was the wrong word to use regarding child 
elements/components... it's not hard, it just seems inelegant.
