Interesting discovery... As Rick suggested earlier, I decided to try switching to DHCP. I edited /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 and set BOOTPROTO=dhcp and commented out the IPADDRESS=, and rebooted. And voila, DNS works.
I really would like to use static IP for my local VM though...
