Hey Jake , I think this should be very much possible but would require some effort to modify the java code here - incubator-cloudstack/core/src/com/cloud/vm/VirtualMachineName.java . This file tries to use the StringBuilder class to generate the VM name ( instance or router VM etc) and writing it to the db.
