Hi Peter:

Check if your cdrom is on the second ide interface. 
If it is, check if it is in the first channel
If that is also ok, check it is set to master.

If cdrom is on the first ide, it must be set as slave with the jumpers at the 
back of it.

that is , if you have a bit more info on the cd-rom, like is it ide or scsi 
or does it has a special interface card. How are your drives configured. 
Interrupts dma etc... With the given information you could even have a faulty 
memory module :-)
