Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately, i've tried/done both of those things.
"modprobe trident"
Failing that, i tried sndconfig, which produced simliar results. The sound 
card is reported successfully configured, but it doesn't work. Could it be 
that i'm having a conflict of some sort (interrupts or something)?

I got sound working on a laptop in Debian, not that complicated really, 
"modbprobe maestro2" is what I had to do at the time, if you load the right 
driver for your soundcard using modprobe it will automagically load the 
required drivers for you.  Also, if you need a "wizard" to do it for you, 
just run "apt-get install sndconfig" and then run the sndconfig app once 
it's installed - it's a ncurses program.  Hope that helps.
