As a workaround, I'd add

dhcpcd eth0

to /etc/rc.d/rc.local (or whatever is appropriate for your distro).

That way at least it would come back up automatically if the machine is
restarted.  It's not a solution, but at least it'll mean that if a power
failure or something occurs, the machine will come back up.

I've got no troubleshooting suggestions though.  That's just goofy.
