I'd start by removing and reseating all the cards, including the RAM.

Generally, this will be a video card, RAM, or a processor that came slightly
loose.

Checking bios codes will tell you exactly what it is, but 90% of the time,
it'll be one of these 3, since they're the only things that are REALLY
needed.

Unless he's been playing inside, I doubt that anything is cooked.  He'd be
able to smell it if it was (generally).
