unless you are developing code that execute in kernel space, no program should 
be able to crash the system. you may be able to grind it close to a halt, but 
never kill it completely. the system should recover from swap storms, though 
it may take a while, and fork bombs can wreak havoc. but all of those things 
can be limitted on a per-user basis.

indeed ... but that's why we have that "Upgrade existing install" option in 
the installer ;-)

well, IO and SMP improved in many important ways in 2.4 .. which may be an 
issue in this case where there is lots of heavy lifting.

forced is a strong word =) quicker to upgrade than do it by hand is probably 
closer to reality.
