Unless they were replaced recently, which is unlikely if they planned to replace them (the laptops), the battereis are probably at or near the end of their lives. Replacements are probably available, ether from IBM or one of the OEM/battery-rebuilder companies, but an expense to be considered. My Thinkpad 1412, of Win 98 vintage, is down to about 5-10 minutes off-leash.
