Just saw on the web. No wonder more and more ppl are using open source soft for all their puter stuff. It is superior. The reasons as to why (less developed ) regions are making the quantum leap, i can not tell you the answer :-)
As for the KDE/Gnome thing, well i have been using Linux since none was in existence, back then i used fvwm, then used gnome for a long time as GUI, then switched over to KDE, and i liked/ still like all of them. I would have to say though, that kde has made great progress in the last few years, which does not mean Gnome was bogged down at all. I would suggest you install both, then decide for yourself, then install the other one leaving the devel libs only (to enable you to use the apps built against it.).
