The best bang for your buck right now is the Lite-on. They make excellent burners which are competitively priced. They even compete with plextor for quality and reliability.a friend of mine is interested in getting a cd burner that runs under linux. i was wondering if anyone could recommend one or two or three models that they have had experience with that i could suggest to them.
Plextor is considered the best you can get. We have one in the office and it never makes platters (bad cds). This reliability is costly though as they cost $80-$100 more than a similar Lite-on.
We have got some MSI burners in as well and they are well priced and seem to work great. They are priced a little bit less than the Lite-on.
As for makes to stay away from:
Yamaha which use to make some of the best burners has been making crap for a couple of years now. We use to platter rates as high as 50% on our last Yamaha.
HP used to be considered good but they just rebrand other manufacturers' burners (some good, some not so good) so it can be a little bit of a crap shoot when buying them.
