I think you got it--seems like a faulty burn of disk 1. A new one has been burnt and I'll start again.

hrm... i'm guessing you downloaded and burnt this copy of mandrake from the
Internet? if so, did you check the md5sum of the iso's you downloaded to make
sure that they are correct?

you also said that windows can't mount the CD, which is odd, since the MDK9
CDs i have have an autorun file on them that pops up a neat little window
with various options such as Install when you pop it into a Windows box.
