I have a Dell laptop that is about 2 years old. The keyboard doesn't work properly, the batter charger and sound card is also shot. These are attached to the motherboard so it would cost ~$1500.00 to fix it. In other words I cannot recomend them for quality. As for support everything works except the internal modem under Linux (it's a winmodem). You can always plug in a pcmcia modem though. Also the graphics card was incompatible with Corel Linux 1.0, but worked under RedHat 7.0+ and the sound card did not work with the 2.2 kernel. > 2.Reccomended upgrades? I will be doing some 2D graphics work but I > Think 1.7Ghz and 16MB Graphics should be OK? Should be fine unless you want to play ut2003 :-). > 3.Dell is allways expensive for RAM so I think will just get standard > RAM in one chip and do my own upgrade later. > Any problems there? I don't think so, you should be able to get RAM at FutureShop. > 4. Was thinking of getting an external burner later, is this akward > under Linux? I've only had limited experience with external burners, and no luck getting it to work. However my internal burner works great. Jesse
