1- sounds very much as if X is not on your box. to confirm do:
rpm -qa | grep XFree
you should get 6-7 packages listed if X is installed.
if it isn't grab your CDs and
rpm -Uvh XFree86-xfs-4.2.1-3mdk and
XFree86-libs and
XFree86-75dpi-fonts and
XFree86-server and
XFree86 and
XFree86-100dpi-fonts and any dependancies any of these packages require.
then, once X is nicely tucked inside your machine do
XFdrake
2 - "exit" simply exits from a terminal. It won't shutdown your system.
try (likely as root):
shutdown -h now
or, to reboot
shutdown -r now
or, if you don't want to shutdown immediately
shutdown -h +5 (for a 5 minute delay)
But bear in mind the 'reboot" laws:
75-90% of Windows' problems will be fixed or improved by rebooting but
30-50% of Linux problems will be worsened by rebooting. It is almost
always better to fix what's broken from inside a working (even crippled)
system. it is also always more educational and usually more fun.
similarly, re-installing may fix what's broke but won't help you learn
to fix what's broke.
go get 'em!
