Hi There ...

It is bizarre that the Debian distro hung like that. In any event since you have re-installed RH, you may need to upgrade your X server cuz it seems like the running version does not support your video card.

You should get the binaries for XFree86 4.2.0 and try it out, or check www.xfree86.org to see which X server supports your video card.

To configure you can run XFree86 -configure

Hi gang.
I've recently purchased a new box, specs as follows.
Pentium 4, 1.8 Gh on a Gigabyte motherboard
256 Mb ram
2 hard drives of 40 Gb each NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 440 video card with 64 Mb ram
Windows XP (I still need it for my accounting software) on its own 5 Gb partition on the first hard drive.
I have tried to install Debian on the second drive where I previously had it on my old system. Got as far as installed the base system and rebooted. Messages got to the point where it was freeing up unused kernal memory and just hung.
I then tried to install Red Hat 7.3 on several partitions on the first drive and everything seemed to go fine untill I rebooted again. This distro got just about all the way to starting X and then the screen kept flickering and eventually I got the following message.
INIT: Id "X" respawning too fast.
disabled for 5 minutes.
After 5 minutes this was repeated.
Does anybody have any ideas for me? Thanks in advance.
Regards
Mel
