anyone have any luck getting this card running under linux?
Definitely runs well with both the current DRI CVS drivers and the ATI drivers as well.

and, any recomendations for some linux based programs
- tv capture (from a camcorder, or co-ax cable)
You will need to look at the Gatos for this. They should have a driver

http://gatos.sourceforge.net

Personally, I would recommend against using this card for tv capture. Most AIW's Capture features not well supported under linux traditionally. If I were you I would save your money and buy just a 9500 or 9000 Pro and purchase as separate capture and firewire cards.

- dvd playing
Mplayer is probably the best though probably not as slick looking as Ogle or Xine (The GUI that is)

- video editing/compositing (like adobe premiere, or after effects)
Checkout Film-Gimp.

- 3d rendering (other then blender)
Mostly commercial like Maya3D

- ray tracing (can't seem to find a download for renderman anymore).
No idea.
