I'm using LG products in two different machines, one a CD-RW unit and 
the other is a combo drive CD-RW/DVD-ROM and they both work perfectly. 
FWIW, I've had SuSE 8.0, RH 7.2/7.3/8.0, Slackware 8.0/8.1 and now 
Gentoo 1.4 all seeing and able to use the drives at one time or 
another.

As long as you are using one of the newer releases of <pick your 
favorite distro> then you should be all set as they usually recognize 
and setup the drives for you.

Your mileage may vary...
