Some software ties a license key to the MAC (ProEngineer, for one).  When we purchased a new PC, we needed to reapply for a license, and that was a 6-8 week process.  (I haven't used ProE in several years, so that may have changed).  Anyway, if we changed the MAC, the people could begin using their new PC immediately rather than letting it sit around doing nothing for the first 2 months.

The pros to having a MAC address are that your ethernet device will work properly.

I don't know of any advantages to being able to change your MAC address; all ethernet devices have MAC addresses specifically assigned to them, each one is unique- though I'm sure there have been duplicates before.
