I have been using Linux off and on for around a year. I tried it out about 5 or so years ago, and botched the RH5.2 setup, so I went crawling back to the "other OS". After many crashes, I finally got P/o'd with it and decided to learn as much as I could about Linux, and make the jump. I have a great setup now using Mandrake 9.0. There is an Install fest coming up on Feb 8 I think at Nexus Books. It sounds just like what your after, since they will be installing many different Distro's and configuring the machines. I am going to try and get there myself and pickup some pointers from the experts :o) The more I learn, the more I realize I don't know anything...;o) Linux allows you a way to really understand what the computer is really doing behind the scenes, instead of having the OS do everything for you..
