Thanx to all who helped especially Nathanael. It turned out to be IBM who installed an 80 pin cable to the tape drive that they provided in the new e-server. The device according to Seagate is strictly a mode 3 device and was therefore never going to run the way IBM had assembled it. After changing the cable it was up and running flawlessly.
