Sorry all, a bit more info,

My exact Setup is as follows:

I have 3 machines on my home network, a box with windows XP for the wife, a dual boot Red Hat 8 / windows 2000 box and a 3rd box also running RedHat 8.0. which I use as a server

The RedHat 8.0 server is currently running Samba 2.2.7-2 as a PDC, The XP box and 2K box are joined to the samba domain, my wife and I can log in, share files, works great. The server also does DNS, DHCP, sendmail, and NTP for the network as well.

What I am trying to do, is set up the server as a master NIS server so that when I boot my 2K / RH box into Linux, I can login with my network ID (tooler) and password without going to the trouble of setting up Samba and Winbind on the 2K/RH box, which I have done before but is a bit of overkill.

I have set up the Samba box as a NIS master, and set up the RH 8 install on my workstation as a NIS client. I can Login to the client with the username "tooler" which is only set up on the Samba/NIS server exactly like I want. The only problem I have is the one described in my earlier post.

500 is the first user assigned so 500 is you on the machine you're setting up to network with. You are working as root but you are still likely user 500. )

I have been experimenting with Red Hat 8.0 and NIS.

I have managed to set up a master server and a client, but the only
problem I have is that when I log in to the client machine as a regular
user, I get the following error:

id: cannot find name for user ID 500

The logon is allowed, and I can start X on the client, use apps, etc.
Any files I create as this user show "500" as the owner, not the user name.

The System logs on the client show the login with the username:

Jan 14 21:21:18 ROBLINUX login(pam_unix)[885]: session opened for user
tooler by LOGIN(uid=0)
Jan 14 21:21:18 ROBLINUX -- tooler[885]: LOGIN ON tty1 BY tooler

Google does not seem to have much useful info, and I was wondering if
someone has any experience with NIS has maybe seen this before?

Please let me know what config files and other info you would like to see.

Thanks in advance,
Rob.
