yes, there are a number of speed improvements in 3.1. the developers are
always looking for (and often finding) ways to make things faster. once a
particular part of the code base gets close to being "feature complete" and
stable then all that's really left to do is optimize it =)
interestingly, a new email list was started last month called kde-optimize.
people working on serious optimizations in the KDE codebase are discussing
things and sharing ideas, so the pace of optimization should only improve.
strides in XFree86 in the areas of font handling and better drivers are
helping, as are improvements in gcc itself. all in all it's looking like a
very nice time for the Free Software desktop.
