sounds like the nautilus desktop... i fail to understand what made them think
it was a great idea to combine the implementation of the desktop with the
file manager. monolithic design tends to suck.

easiest way is to do a ps ax on the command line, locate the nautilus process
(assuming that's what it is) and kill it. log out, log back in. the session
manager should save your sessions without the GNOME desktop icons and restore
it that way too.
you could also use KDE's built in process table to do the process killing.
press Ctrl-Esc to bring it up...
