First of all there is a standard Gnome program that should to what you want. It's called Gnome Character Map. I don't know what distro. your using but it was installed with a standard install of RedHat 8.0. It reminds me of Apple's Key Caps program and it lets you select the character you want and then copy it to the clipboard. As for your install, make sure you have the package XFree86-devel on your system. You can then do the command: $ rpm -ql XFree86-devel to find out where it is installed. On my system the include directory is /usr/X11R6/include/.
