i have no idea what this person is doing, but knoppiz manages to do pretty
much exactly what you're suggesting is not possible.
another approach would be to have a "First boot" wizard that sets the h/w
specific things up w/some user interaction. but knoppix seems to suggest that
even this is unecessary
