There is always the possibility Pat that one or another kernel may have, or not have, some hardware or module related issues that could show up in one distro, but not in another. However, since you are also experiencing strange behavior under Windows 2000, I think this is a dead end (IMHO). Everything continues to point almost exculsively to some sort of hardware related conflict. I would start with trying to pass the "noapic" parameter at boot. When you see the Grub boot loader, there should be a key combo or something to let you pass kernel options before booting. I dont want to reboot right now and it doesnt come to me right now what the key combo is...maybe F2? I am sure someone else on the list can fill in my blanks here.
