Roy, forgive me, and please correct me if I am wrong, I have never heard of a software license that would prevent you from using Linux HA (heartbeat) and the DRBD software to mirror your data between nodes.
You are right. These are possible options that we are looking into and will most likely be used. A mirror solution IS what we are looking for. What we don't want is a load balancing virtual server because that would require multiple running copies of the commercial software and multiple licenses where a mirror would only require one license because the mirror is actually a backup that is designed to act as a fast recovery system running in a suspended mode.

We have found many great open source solutions to do this and we are looking into all of them. They each have advantages and disadvantages but it helps to see a selection of what is available so we can pick what best fits our needs.
If you don’t mind, what is the software you were planning to mirror?
Unfortunately my client has not authorized me to talk about what software they plan to run. I don't have any details my self, all I know is that it is a lot of money per system to run it. They still may change their minds. Right now I am just exploring options for them.

Most commercial software is licensed this way in that you can make backups but you can only run one copy for each license at a time.
