I read through the article (thanks John) and have decided to abandon my learning
attempts at ASP.NET on my public server. I can still play with .NET on my workstation
- until I decide to replace my development environment at least.

So, I now would like to dump my W2K server and install a pure linux solution. To do
so, I'll need the following:

Web server (obvious choice of Apache)
Email server
Database Server
J2EE platform for JSP web pages.
File interoperability with Windows workstations.

Some of this is pretty obvious - probably a Red Hat or Suse installation, with Apache,
and probably their default server configuration to get the email services, and SAMBA.

For the web server, I'd like to be building custom web apps. Other than Cold Fusion
and JSP are there any decent application servers? (I don't consider PHP an
application server - more of a CGI Scripting language, though I know it's pretty
powerful). Of course, free is preferred (which makes it hard to choose Cold Fusion,
even though I know it...)

For database, I think I'd prefer Postgres - everything I've heard about MySql makes me
think it's to databases what MS Access is. Whereas Postgres seems to be more on par
with Oracle/MS SQL Server.

The J2EE platform is an unknown to me. I have limited experience in Java/JSP, but am
aware of some of the packages. Would Tomcat or JBoss be the better choice? (small
server, low volume) - also I'd hope that my experiences here would be of use at work
where we deal with large and small companies.... Oh, and what about the development
tool? I'll be sticking with my Win2K workstation for now and will likely use JBuilder
- does it behave well with Tomcat/JBoss?

Any suggestions, and or URLs for more details would be appreciated - on all aspects of
this task (i.e. configuring/managing email, samba, apache, etc.) I suspect this
process will take me a while (evenings and weekends - when I have time), but if I can
nail together a plan of attack, all the better...

Thanks in advance!!!

(Looking forward to the WINE presentation - maybe I can dump my workstation too.. :D)

Shawn

There is a VERY long but interesting article here

http://www.aaxnet.com/editor/edit029.html

about the futures of IT etc. Took me about forty minutes to read, but is
inspiring me to accelerate my migration despite the short-tem pain.
