my guess: you didn't set up [x]inetd to offer POP/IMAP services. either that
or there was a firewall rule blocking that port. those are really the only
two rational possibilities.

there are two skills the virtually every Windows-only admin I've met in the
last several years mysteriously lacks:

1) the ability to find information such as HOWTOs and FAQs on the Internet
(no, msdn.microsoft.com does not count ;)

2) the ability to read and follow textual instructions describing what to do

because these are not (as) useful skills to have in the Windows world, they
seem to not be encouraged or developed. in the Linux world, being able to
find and read online documentation is what will make the difference between
smooth sailing and high amounts of frustration.

here's some other things to keep in mind:

o Rebooting will almost never solve your problem.
o There are no magic incantations: every happens for a reason, and will
happen the same way every time.
o When something says "do XYZ, then type "fooBar baZ", do XYZ FIRST and then
type EXACTLY "fooBar BaZ". do not skip steps and do not insert steps until
you understand what it is your are doing.

it's great to see that you stuck with it and got it working in the end,
however. even if it would've been easier to go back to what you already knew,
you kept going. that's the only way one learns new things, and it shows a
great attitude and aptitude.
