Had same problem, not exactly sure what actually stopped
it but try turnin off AND disconnecting printer from computer.
There is a fuser command as well from the command line.
fuser -k /dev/lp0     for parrelel port
fuser -k /dev/usb/lp0    for USB 
Also if using KDE use System- Tools- Print Jobs is possible.
What program, printer, distribution?
