Since the RAID is software-based, a low(er)-level Partition Magic partition
resize will not be reflected in the mirror.

I'm no expert, but I would think that resizing the partitions each to the
same size would work fine, but you may need to re-sync your RAID mirror
after. I suppose a lot would depend on how the software RAID works or is
implemented.

>From a logical standpoint, it stands to reason that software RAID is
basically just going to send 1 data stream out to 2 block devices or /dev
entries instead of just one. So, the underlying details of those devices
(partition sizes, etc.) should only matter from that perspective (which I
don't think it would in this case, if the partitions are the same size).

All that being said, my educational expose is based entirely on conjecture
and speculation. :-D It depends heavily on an understanding of the RAID
software and block devices under Linux, which I don't have. :-P So don't
take my word for it, and certainly not with any production data.

What I can speak to is that PM support of a given filesystem can either lag
behind a little bit, or possibly not even be implemented perfectly <gasp!>.
For example, in PM6, NTFS support was not true NTFS v5, although it did
resize NTFS partitions created by Win2K/XP (possibly it was based on
pre-release NTFS v5?). But if I installed Win2K on an NTFS partition
formatted by PM6 (and didn't subsequently use Setup's format utility), I
would end up with problems later on.

How long has PM had ext3 support? That's a question I would ask myself
before resizing anything you don't want corruption or loss on (i.e.
production data).

My two cents, and probably not a lot of help, but hopefully it all works out
for you.

Curtis.

Subject: (clug-talk) Partition resize question

I need to resize 2 ext3 partitions on a RAID-1 software mirrored drive. 2
drives, both have exact same 2 partitions. Now if I boot up Partition Magic
8, and resize one of them, would this be duplicated to the other drive?
Probably not right? So how should/could I do this? Just repartition each
seperately, to the exact same sizes?
