As far as I know, there isn't a date set to release the 1.4_final which
will become 1.4.  1.4 was originally supposed to be released back in
December :)  1.4rc4 is quite stable though, although I know that doesn't
help with the precompiled stages problem you have :(  Pretty much the
options are wait until 1.4 final is released, use the precompiled stages
for generic x86 in 1.4rc4 *or* you can use the 1.4rc2 stages and then
update the system from there.  1.4rc2 has precompiled stages for athlon,
athlon-mp, i586, i686, pentium3, and generic x86.  You will need to do a
lot of compiling to update it though I'm afraid since it's rc2 :(
