Hey Group,

With Brian Horncastle's latest endeavour with the Newbie (Nube) Linux stuff,
the Executive have had some discussion about this and we have realized that
with CLUG being a registered Society now, we have to be very conscious of
what information we have up for the public.

While the Executive did not officially sanction Brian to create a CLUG-newbie
website, he took an idea that has been openly discussed, put a lot of good
work into it and put together a first-class project in record time! This
speaks to the fearless DIY self-reliance that we all love about free software
and it's advocates.

However, seeing as this is new territory for us all, the Executive also
realized that we missed a step along the way. As the first effort of its kind
we were faced with the challenge of how to responsibly manage this, without
cramping Brian's style or damping the collective energy that has added to it
thus far. Brian has accepted our gratitude as well as our willingness to have
this incorporated into the CLUG website as a whole (with Brian retaining
control of the work he's done). Look for it soon under
http://nube.calgary.linux.ca or http://calgary.linux.ca/~nube while DNS is
resolving.

While discussing this we (the Executive) realized a few important things.
Whether we like it or not, as a registered Society we are now a possible
target for litigation. If we put erroneous or misleading information out,
somebody could call us on it and wipe us out in a blink. If someone puts
something up online on CLUG's behalf (even with the best intentions) and
problems arise, CLUG is accountable.

In the future we believe it is in the best interests of CLUG that there be an
approval process for any content that represents our Society (CLUG) and its
membership prior to its publication. We don't want to get in the way
of anyone's great ideas, and enthusiasm, but as the Executive, our
responsibilities include insuring everything associated with CLUG be put out
there in the most professional and accurate manner as possible (also known as
performing "Due Diligence").

In the future we wish to encourage anyone who wishes to help CLUG's
ongoing efforts, to work together with members of the Executive to ensure that
our collective goals as well as our responsibilities are met.

We trust that you all understand. If you have any concerns you may post to
this thread or off-list as you wish and we will try to further elaborate.

The CLUG Executive
