My thanks to everyone who helped with my Mandrake 9.1 & S3 video-chip problem, and particularly to Graham Monk, who knew the secret (hidden in plain sight) of getting my IBM 300GL to boot from the CD-ROM. It wasn't working when I left, but I found an ATI Rage card at home, and only five installs later had it working. The Mandrake video setup is inconsistent some settings don't have a 'test' option (they all failed), some have a test that appears to have failed, but actually run OK if you're persistent. KDE 3.1 is beautiful, ditto the fonts in OpenOffice etc.
