A related possibility is that the switch might be mishandling the
auto-negotiation when connected directly to the 3com card.  We have
experienced communication problems due to auto-negotiation failures. Look at
the negotiated media and duplex settings with vortex-diag. yes, I know you
said that your trying to fix the speed. These units have a 'history'.

Be glad you do not have Cisco inline ! Cisco and 3com do not get along well.
