I have a client that is looking to deploy modems on computer equipment already running Linux. The kernels are upgradable on the systems, so one can assume that my questions here are based on using latest kernels if need be.
With that said, I have been investigating a multitude of USB modems. I was disappointed to learn that most of the USB modems today are Winmodems with all the issues that go along with that (Like finding drivers that work for many of the proprietary chip sets. So when I started my investigation, I started with USR. Looks like they are not supported (I have used USR in the past, on windows systems and DOS over the years, and like the products). I found that modems based on some of the Lucent chip sets are better supported (Using CDC ACM). The problem is, I have never seen any of these USB modems run on Linux. I am approaching this community in the hopes that someone here may have a recommendation. Zoome has a supported modem, and Supra (in some cases you need particular firmware releases etc). As well, whatever solution for modems I come up with, they must be easily purchased. And so on top of finding peoples experiences here and hopefully recommendations, I am wondering where the best place in Canada is to purchase such modems. In quantities of 5-25 at a time. -- Mike Petch CApp::Sysware Consulting Ltd. Suite 1002,1140-15th Ave SW. Calgary, Alberta, Canada. T2R 1K6. (403)804-5700.
