Perhaps the best bet is just to use

cat /etc/*-release

This way you don't need to guess at various flavor names.

PS, there's a gentoo-release too.

Even more interestingly, my Gentoo Server shows Gentoo Base System version
1.4.2.9  Which is pretty neat since it was originally installed as 1.2.  I
assume an emerge --update world brought it up to the more or less current
spec at some point in the past.

Do other distros do that too?  IE, if I install RH 7, can I patch it up to 9
or would it need to have 9 installed as an upgrade?  I guess it's a fuzzier
line between patching and upgrading with Gentoo.  That may not be a good
thing for me.  Hmmm.
