Thanks Szemir... I suspect the problem probably is the DMA issue. I've been ignoring it for a little while - I don't want to rebuild my kernel just yet as I'm trying to stabilize some other stuff. Guess I'll have to do this soon though. On the otherhand, I'm only using the cdrecord routines for backup, which runs at 2 in the morning, so I don't normally see the permformance hit.
