Hi All,

Wish I could have went to the IFest today but things came up here...and
wasn't feeling well this week, so rest was VERY GOOD and deserved. Hope
everyone had fun, learned lots and came out with a better appreciation for
FOOS and what it can do for us.

In the spirit of the day, I was able to get permission and time from fianc
to FINALLY sit down and dedicate some time to a dedicated Linux computer.
The victim is an old IBM 300PL with 2.5 GB, USB, built-in ethernet, video
card, sound, etc. I think I have upgraded the RAM but can't remember...but
seem to be running ok so far. I am installing Red Hat 8.0 from the
administrating book I won at one of the IFest's (Thank You Nexus!!!). I
know people will criticize my choice in distro, but I have this HUGE tomb
talking about the administration and management of Red Hat networks, so why
not use it.

The only problems I have run into so far, is trying to find a HDD that would
actually work and didn't have bad sectors; being told I didn't have enough
RAM to run the graphical installer, and being corrected about dependencies
before installing. I was bumped into the text-based installer and choose
the Custom installer route and spent better part of a couple hours choosing
packages...(F2 for package info) with a dinner break in between
(mmmm...Mitchell Sausages and Perogies!). I did choose auto-partitioning
and everything seemed pretty reasonable with just over 2.1 GB for install.
I managed to get my choices down to just under 1600 MB, but with the
dependency warning it put it back up to just over 2000 MB. I will likely be
saving files and stuff on my 20GB drives which is in my Windows 2K box.

All in all, everything is going fine and the only thing I may potentially
have to do in the future (I think?) is to pop an additional HDD (1GB or so)
in for local file storage.

You are probably bored with my ramblings by now, but I wanted to show
everyone that I am not just a FOSS evangelist and to prove my intents of
getting a box going (so many excuse about not doing before...just a mask for
being scared!). I shall depart now.

Cameron
