This link points to L0phtCrack, which is a well known password cracking tool. On the down side, I don't think it works for Win2000/XP because they no longer use the LanManager methods for authentication. (Please correct me if I'm wrong). So, it doesn't seem to be a viable option.
One would think there'd be a relatively easy way (given physical access to a computer), to recover or reset the local admin password. After all, humans forget things all the time... There is a trial of the software which you should be able to use but it may take quite a while. If that doesnt work you can always use fdisk.
