Here's my experience with Gentoo. Aaron, stop smiling...

I'd like to run Oracle, but it's not supported on Gentoo.
I'd like to run ColdFusion, but it's not supported either.
I'd like to run Samsung Contact, but it isn't supported.

Each of these three is supported on either Red Hat or Suse, since they are
the 2 largest distros in the world. I'd argue that RH is most commonly used
as a desktop or when people are initially experimenting, and Suse is most
commonly used once a Linux commitment is actually made. Frankly, RH's
actions over the past maybe 2 years have pissed me off to the point that I
have zero interest in working with them. That started with BlueCurve, got a
whole lot worse with the "fill out this survey or we cut off your RHN
account" and was cemented with dropping support for their last SEVERAL
(including current) generation of products effective almost immediately.
That leaves Suse as a common, well known, and generally supported distro.

So (mostly for Aaron's benefit) why Gentoo? Gentoo is lightning fast, and
simple to maintain. I assume LFS would be equally customizeable, but not
much else is. I like Gentoo because they're generally ahead of the curve in
terms of adopting new functionality. Gentoo has literally zero bloat, and I
feel comfortable arguing that it has fewer security concerns because it such
a minimalistic installation. My experience with Gentoo's support (IRC, then
Phone) cemented my choice for Gentoo, and I do not regret it. If I could
get Oracle, CF and/or SC running on it, I would, but it is beyond my skill
level to force them to install somewhere they don't want to.

Kev.
