Hi After lurking on this one, i will have one question: Did fsck run properly, where there any errors ? And my 2 cents: you may be looking at ram error. If you have more the one modules try swapping them around, also try removing one, and running the system on one module, then repeating the procedure with the other module etc... Or even better, replace them (borrow some) and see if the crash thing goes away. Unfortionatly ram is very fragile regarding power fluctuations.
Another 2 cents: reinstall vm again, i know, just do it, if it works, then i will explain why.
