I am the king of non-helpfulness today, but for what it's worth:

Linux kernel 2.6 does away with ide-scsi driver for ATAPI IDE DVD/CD
burning. The driver is still available (see Linux kernel mailing list
for lots on the subject, e.g.
http://testing.lkml.org/slashdot.php?mid=435847) but it is not necessary
from a kernel/hardware perspective for burning anymore.

Fair warning: there are still lots of little issues with 2.6, but I've
been running 2.6.0-test11 happily for a few weeks now. One of the lucky
ones, I guess.

Of course, I'm assuming you're running 2.4.x and so that doesn't do you
much good right now... :-P
