With regards to the time zone issue...

Can't remember which one off the top of my head - but it's detailed in the
Gentoo install guide - you're still running Gentoo aren't you? :) In this
file you set if your are running UTC (I hope I got that right), or "local".
This value determines what your hardware clock is set to, then any time
offsets are done from there.

is there any way to get a list of users and/or groups on a box without
deciphering /etc/shadow et al?

also cant figure out whats wrong with my time settings. I
linked /etc/localtime to /usr/share/zoneinfo/Canada/Mountain, it doesnt
appear to be working...read through man zic, no help :(
