[clug-talk] Customizing Linux

Everyone has a different idea on how they should run linux.  For the 
pros out there what kind of modifications do you make to your compiles 
of linux that customise it to your likes? eg, what sort of utilities do 
you use? what windowmanager's do you use? what gadgets do you add-on? etc

i ask this because i've just started to use gentoo, and on the advice of 
some people on #gentoo on irc.freenode.net i have installed XFCE4 a very 
functional and FAST windowmanager and i find it very impressive and was 
just wondering what sort of other utils you use that make linux 'linux' 
for you.
