I basically need to simulate a denial of service attack in the network in question to try to measure at what point it becomes inoperable. The reason for this is mainly for documentation purposes, so that I can identify how much load the network can take before various services become (seemingly) un-responsive. Im trying to optimize this network for performance the best I can. Basically Im trying to measure the responsiveness of things like mail servers, web servers, directory services, and network databases. When I have identified problem areas, then I can go back and tweak those services to hopefully perform a bit better. Ive found a few Windows programs to do what I need, kind of but as with most things there are always better ways of doing things under Linux. I could just do a continuous ping, with varying sizes of packets, but I need something that maybe provides some more measurements for the responsiveness of the various services. Anyway, appreciate the suggestions.

Thanks,

Brian H.

su -c 'ping -f -i0'? ;-)

more seriously, what aspect of the network are you looking to stress, and in
what ways do you want to stress it?
