today would have been the 100th birthday of Gaston Julia. he was a 
mathematical genius and described what would later come to be known as the 
Julia set in 1918. his work wasn't fully appreciated until Mandelbrot came 
along in the 1970s and started using computers to explore fractals ... 
Mandelbrot's pioneering work brought Julia's work back to the public mind 
after decades of languishing unappreciated for what it was. Julia apparently 
died in 1978, so at least he got to see his work start to get the recognition 
it deserved.
