Hello,

Here's an interesting article on cnn:

http://www.cnn.com/2004/TECH/biztech/02/16/microsoft.monoculture.ap/index.html

I like the biological analogy of a monuculture being particularly weak to a
devastating virus equivalent to an epidemic. It's an excellent way to identify the
problem.

As usual though, in the IT field, people make general, illogical conclusions that
turn them away from a solution.

"Charney says monoculture theory doesn't suggest any reasonable solutions; more use
of the Linux open-source operating system, a rival to Microsoft Windows, might create
a "duoculture," but that would hardly deter sophisticated hackers.

True diversity, Charney said, would require thousands of different operating systems,
which would make integrating computer systems and networks virtually impossible.
Without a Microsoft monoculture, he said, most of the recent progress in information
technology could not have happened."

There's nothing "virtually impossible" about having thousands of different operating
systems integrated into a network. And how galling to attribute MS with the recent
progress in info tech.

I think that a good future in this IT industry lies in specialization. Security
specialists have a bright future ahead.

  Food for thought.

Doug
