As far as I know an SMP enabled kernel does nothing for a single
processor system (and there is no overhead involved in an SMP based
kernel running on a signle processor system). I'd say if you can use a
non SMP kernel on a single processor system, and it means it will solve
a problem - I'd go for it if I were in your shoes.

Personally I don't use SMP kernels on any machine with one processor.
